What Is Steamy Erotic Romance?

“This is porn!” a friend exclaimed while reading a steamy erotic romance novel I recently published. In his brief moment of being tiffed. “I do not read porn” is what he finally told me.

Despite the fact, I told him it was an erotic romance. I suppose his perception of erotic romance is a candlelit dinner and discovering erotic ways to enjoy your dinner and stay within the kiss-on-the- lips boundaries.

So in order to answer this question, What is steamy erotic romance? I did some research. According to “Romance Writers of America” erotic romance can be often quite steamy. At times it can be down-right naughty.

There is one underlying test. Do the scenes in question do anything to the story? Does the scene develop the character, strengthen the relationship, or add to the plot line? If you took the scene out would it have any effect on the story?

As Sylvia Day explains on her website, erotic romance is a story of romance where the author utilizes their intimate relationship to build their story. This intimacy, no matter how steamy, is congenital to the story as a whole. In addition, the story must end in a happily ever after.

In my book, Lexi who is an eclectic witch vows herself to Adonis. Her erotic encounters are through

lucid dreams. It is through the very descriptive encounters I tried to exemplify the connection of her and Adonis.

The strength of their relationship is told to an even greater level in the macro view of the trilogy.

Not just focusing on the micro of one-third of the story. And not just casting your judgement based on the scene as a stand-alone.

The pain and hurt she had suffered before performing the ritual of vowing herself would have been unrealistic of her committing to a romantic relationship with a person. To be so bold as she was in college is a complete contrast to her character as a child.

So to me, If I was to pull the erotic scenes out of the story; then there would be confusion as to how
